THE FMOS-COSMOS SURVEY OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES AT z ∼ 1.6. III. SURVEY DESIGN, PERFORMANCE, AND SAMPLE CHARACTERISTICS

چکیده
We present a spectroscopic survey of galaxies in the COSMOS field using the Fiber Multi-Object Spectrograph (FMOS), a near-infrared instrument on the Subaru Telescope. Our survey is specifically designed to detect the Hα emission line that falls within the H-band (1.6-1.8 μm) spectroscopic window from star-forming galaxies with 1.4 < z < 1.7 and Mstellar & 10 10 M⊙. With the high multiplex capability of FMOS, it is now feasible to construct samples of over one thousand galaxies having spectroscopic redshifts at epochs that were previously challenging. The high-resolution mode (R ∼ 2600) effectively separates Hα and [NII]λ6585 thus enabling studies of the gas-phase metallicity and photoionization state of the interstellar medium. The primary aim of our program is to establish how star formation depends on stellar mass and environment, both recognized as drivers of galaxy evolution at lower redshifts. In addition to the main galaxy sample, our target selection places priority on those detected in the far-infrared by Herschel/PACS to assess the level of obscured star formation and investigate, in detail, outliers from the star formation rate stellar mass relation. Galaxies with Hα detections are followed up with FMOS observations at shorter wavelengths using the J-long (1.111.35 μm) grating to detect Hβ and [OIII]λ5008 that provides an assessment of extinction required to measure star formation rates not hampered by dust, and an indication of embedded Active Galactic Nuclei. With 460 redshifts measured from 1153 spectra, we assess the performance of the instrument with respect to achieving our goals, discuss inherent biases in the sample, and detail the emissionline properties. Our higher-level data products, including catalogs and spectra, are available to the community.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DENSITY FIELD ESTIMATION FOR GALAXIES: NEW INSIGHTS INTO THE EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES WITH ENVIRONMENT IN COSMOS OUT TO z ∼ 3
It is well-known that galaxy environment has a fundamental effect in shaping its properties. We study the environmental effects on galaxy evolution, with an emphasis on the environment defined as the local number density of galaxies. The density field is estimated with different estimators (weighted adaptive kernel smoothing, 10 and 5 nearest neighbors, Voronoi and Delaunay tessellation) for a ...
متن کاملThe Zurich Extragalactic Bayesian Redshift Analyzer and its first application: COSMOS
We present the Zurich Extragalactic Bayesian Redshift Analyzer (ZEBRA). The current version of ZEBRA combines and extends several of the classical approaches to produce accurate photometric redshifts down to faint magnitudes. In particular, ZEBRA uses the template-fitting approach to produce Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian redshift estimates based on the following points. (i) An automatic itera...

Background Health system performance assessment (HSPA) is a major tool for evidence-based governance in health systems and patient/population-orientation is increasingly considered as an important aspect. The IPHA study aims (1) to undertake a comprehensive performance assessment of the German health system from a population perspec...
متن کاملMorphology Segregation of Galaxies in the Color-color Gradient Space
We have found the u − r color versus g − i color gradient space can be used for highly successful morphology classification of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In this space galaxies form early and late type branches well-separated from each other. The location of galaxies along the branches reflects the degree and locality of star formation activity, and monotonically corresponds to t...
متن کاملConfirming EIS Clusters . Multi - object Spectroscopy
Clusters of galaxies arise from exceptionally high peaks of the primordial fluctuation density field. Their properties as a function of redshift, z, are therefore highly sensitive to the nature of such cosmic fluctuations. It is therefore very important to have a sample of galaxy clusters covering as wide a redshift range as possible. Recently, Olsen et al. (1999) and Scodeggio et al. (1999) ha...
